Grand Atlantic is an unusual Australian band. Neither defiantly anti-commercial nor oriented toward the mainstream, they write and record detailed and idiosyncratic pop songs that ignore current fashion, yet have massive radio potential.
They are the critics’ favourites, yet are almost unknown outside their own hardcore fanbase. They have received solid community radio support, yet mainstream airplay has so far eluded them. Enigmatic might be an understatement.
However, their debut album was extremely well-received all around the world; they regularly pull out stinging, exuberant live shows; and they have finished a brand new album that might just be the finest guitar-pop record that you’ll hear this year. Entitled ‘How We Survive’, it’s crammed full of meticulously-crafted radio-friendly songs that are testament to Grand Atlantic’s songwriting skills, and that should see them move to the forefront of the Australian music scene.
Grand Atlantic makes records the unfashionable way – carefully, thoughtfully, with no regard for fashion, demographics or transient trends. They’re about integrity in a world overrun by disposable corporate drones. They’re about real songwriting and playing as an antidote to the one-dimensional kiddie-fodder that dominates the charts. Their enthralling and mysterious new album was mixed by Magoo (Midnight Oil, Powderfinger, Regurgitator, An Horse) and has been mastered in Nashville.
With wall-shaking guitar riffs that give way to an addictive pop melody saturation, ‘She’s A Dreamer’, the first release from the new album, demonstrates a band set to take 2009 by force. It’s a summery blast of a single, and it perfectly sums up the band’s musical philosophy.
Already pre-release tracks have been picked up by podcasts Radio Orphans, Dalecast, and The Get Up Rotation, with more every week. Internet radio stations everywhere from Belgium to Russia have been spinning the preview tracks and ‘Tripwires’ was recently selected for AusTrade in LA’s ‘Planetary’ Compilation, a college radio sampler of the best emerging music in Australia, resulting in extensive radio play in the US college market and interest from several companies there.
